Oysterhaven Biodiversity Reserve
Nature restoration and research on the south-west coast of Ireland
Oysterhaven Biodiversity Reserve is a pioneering nature-led research project dedicated to ecological restoration and recovery. We utilise science-based techniques to enhance natural processes, providing a range of ecosystem services and boosting biodiversity. Our initiatives—such as reinstating wildlife corridors and wetlands, improving soil health and water quality, and reintroducing native herbivores to restore natural processes of grazing ecology—are transforming the landscape.
The reserve is home to a growing array of flora and fauna, including over 70 species of bird, six species of bat, larger mammals such as otters, hares, and foxes, and countless species of insects, plants, fungi and more.

Restoration
We’re using the latest methods in evidence-based ecological restoration, regenerative agriculture and science-based principles of rewilding to restore the land, create and enhance wildlife habitats and corridors and demonstrate how nature and biodiversity can bounce back when given the chance.

Research
Habitats Research Centre is our research arm, dedicated to scientific research into biodiversity conservation and restoration. We collaborate with third level institutes, state bodies and NGOs to research and develop best practice in conservation science. Learn more here.

Education
We believe in the power of education to inspire positive change. Our educational activities, including social farming, walks, talks, and workshops are designed to foster a deeper appreciation of nature and to empower people to take action to protect our planet.

Heritage
Our native Irish breeds are part of our unique cultural heritage and also play a key role in nature restoration by maintaining natural processes of grazing ecology. We are delighted to be the custodians of a mixed herd of native Irish Dexter cattle and Connemara ponies on the reserve.
